Taekwon-Do, though rooted in ancient traditions of unarmed combat, emerged as a distinct and sophisticated martial art in 1955 under the leadership of Gen. Choi Hong Hi. Unlike the crude forms of self-defense from centuries past, modern Taekwon-Do is recognized for its advanced techniques, effectiveness, and emphasis on overall fitness. Officially named and unified in Korea, the art spread worldwide beginning in 1959, as Choi and his black belt pioneers astounded audiences across Asia. By 1966, Taekwon-Do had grown into a global movement with the founding of the International Taekwon-Do Federation, firmly establishing it as Korea’s national martial art and one of the most respected disciplines in the world.
